SHROVE TUESDAY

In search of Irish and English traditions... What is Shrove Tuesday ? The meaning of "shrove" comes from a word "shrive", which means " to confess ". If you are a religious person, say a Catholic, you go to church on a Sunday and confess your sin s to the priest before the service begins . When is Shrove Tuesday celebrated? This is the last day of the Carnival season, it's one day before Ash Wednesday when LENT begins. Lent is the 40 day period before EASTER. This is the time of abstinence , of giving things up. So Shrove Tuesday is the last chance to indulge yourself, and to use up the foods that are not allowed in Lent. Why are pancakes eaten on Shrove Tuesday? Because they contain fat, butter and eggs which are forbidden to eat during the Lent season. An English pancake is a little different from the Hungarian pancake but not much.
